The Publication of the Supreme Court of Nigeria Monthly Judgments better cited as “S.C.” began from January, 1972 when there was dearth of Law Reports in Nigeria. The Publication which was the brain child of His Excellency late Judge T. O. Elias, then as Chief Justice of Nigeria, appeared regularly on monthly basis. It was at first edited by a Justice of the Supreme Court but the editing was later transferred to a Deputy Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court. However, not every Deputy Chief Registrar had the flair for law reporting. In 1985, less and less effort was being made to publish the Monthly Judgments on time. The consequent result was that the last issue of the Report was published in July, 1988 as “(1988) 7 SC (part 1)”. The Report went comatose

After over ten years of dormancy in the publication of the Report, it was heart warming when Layi Babatunde, Esq., of Messrs Lawbreed Limited came to me with the proposal to revive the Report and not only that, but also to bridge the gap from July 1988 to date. His proposal received the approval of my learned brothers the Honourable Justices of the Supreme Court and myself...”
